Memories of murder
Original title: Salinui Chueok
Country: South Korea
Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery, Thriller.
Memories of murder is directed by Joon-Ho Bong (
the Host,
Mother) and futures stars like Kang-ho Song, Sang-kyung Kim and Roe-ha Kim.
This movie is based on a true story. In 1986 several murders took place in Korea. All the victims are women, and they are raped, tied and had their underwear placed on their head. The police unit in Gyunggi province is up to solve the crime, but the force is small and they're in great lack of experience for a crime of this magnitude. Detective Park Doo-Man is leading the case but with small progress.
Soon Seoul metropolitan police department sends one of their detectives to help the small police force. Seo Tae-Yoon is very qualified for the job and he brings new light to the unsolved murder case. However they have to act fast because they believe a new murder will soon take place.
The end of the movie is revealed in almost every review and trailer - for a reason. If you don't know the ending, you will be very surprised and you will find the ending too abrupt to be able to really appreciate it to the fullest. This is one of those movies where knowing the ending will NOT ruin the movie!
The film is well made with great actors, and the fact that it's based on a true story makes it even more interesting. We are so used to the western police movies where everyone knows exactly what to do, and everything is done in the speed of light, that this movie can really enlighten us how stuck we can get when we lack the right investigate technology. And also how easy it is to get stuck thinking in circles even tho the answer is right in front of your nose. I love that Koreas movies are always so close to reality, both in characters and situations, which is something a really appreciate, because it's easier to like the characters this way with all their flaws and everything.
I really enjoyed this movie, and I can recommend anyone to watch it who likes crime movies.
